Do you need AFL insurance?

AFL or football insurance isn’t mandatory in Australia, but plenty of individuals, families and clubs are choosing it to help players recover from eligible injuries.

AFL participation continues to grow across Australia.

Aussie Rules footy hit a record-breaking 625,000 participants in 2025, an increase of 7% from the previous year. Women and girls now make up 25% of all registered community players, with girls' football one of the fastest-growing areas of the game.

AFL has the highest injury hospitalisations of any ball sport.

Australian Rules Football caused around 5,300 hospitalisations in 2023-24, the highest of any ball sport played in Australia. More than half of the hospitalisations were for fractures, with soft tissue injuries and concussions among the other top common causes.

AFL insurance helps with the unforeseen costs of recovery.

If you're playing football with Flip activated and suffer an eligible injury, we pay you a set cash amount for approved claims, usually within a few business days.

What is AFL insurance with Flip?

Flip's AFL insurance is personal accidental injury cover. If you suffer an eligible injury while playing or training with your cover active, we pay you cash. It's not club liability cover (that protects your club from legal claims). This is personal injury cover to help you recover.

The cash payout is yours to spend however makes most sense for your recovery. Things like physio sessions, knee strapping supplies, a new streaming subscription, getting someone to drive you around, or just having a buffer for peace of mind while your body heals.

Choose from three types of AFL insurance for accidental injuries

The right AFL insurance for you depends on how often you play, whether you need cover for yourself or your whole club, and whether you're playing locally or travelling.

We can't tell you what to buy, but here's how each option works to help you decide. Always read our PDS to see if Flip is right for you.

Hear from our footy customers

Amira
Rugby player, Sydney

Amira wanted rugby player insurance that was simple, fast and gave her confidence to play hard. After seeing Flip on social media, she signed up for a monthly subscription to cover training, games and even injuries outside of footy.

"Footy is a risky sport, but I just want to get out and enjoy it and not worry about what will happen if I get hurt. The whole process, from signing up to claiming, was really simple. It's worth it for me, and it supports what I like to do."

Lynn Spence
President, Gridiron Victoria

Lynn runs Gridiron Victoria and was looking for a way to build trust with parents and players in a full-contact sport. Before Flip Group Active, the organisation only had public liability cover, which didn't protect players who got injured during games. That was holding growth back.

"Gridiron Victoria has never had accident insurance. And that's why it was so important for me to find a provider that we could work well with together. Flip is a hidden gem. I’d encourage everyone to get it."

How to use footballer’s insurance

Here's how Flip works in real football situations, from Saturday club games to school football teams and community programs.

For football overseas

Flip Roaming

Flip Group Active

For local rides

Flip Active

If you take a hard bump in a marking contest and fracture your wrist, Flip Active pays you a cash payout for eligible injuries within a few business days. The cash is yours to use however you want.

If your mouthguard and boots go missing from the changeroom after training, that’s not covered by Flip Active.

Flip Active covers almost any type of AFL activity in Australia and NZ, including Auskick, school footy, community club, interleague, AFLW, AFL Nines and elite level.

For cycling overseas

Flip Roaming

If you're playing in an international footy competition in Ireland and suffer a torn ligament, Flip Roaming reimburses your overseas medical costs (up to A$20,000) and pays you Extra Recovery Cash.

If you get food poisoning the night before a tour match in the UK and have to cancel part of your trip, that's a travel insurance issue, not something Flip Roaming covers.

Travel insurance stops when you land back in Australia. Flip Roaming doesn't. Extra Recovery Cash helps with costs after you get home so you’re supported to get back on the field.

For group rides

Flip Group Active

If a junior player dislocates a shoulder in a Saturday club match, they claim through the Flip app directly and receive a cash payout for their eligible injury within a few business days, with no admin for the club.

If a player arrives at your preseason carnival with a sore hamstring from an injury last month, pre-existing injuries aren't covered under Flip Group Active.

With Flip Group Active, your players claim through the app themselves. No invoices to chase, no paperwork on your end, just fast cash for eligible injuries when someone in your club needs it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is football insurance?

arrow down

AFL insurance or football insurance helps protect players from the financial impact of injuries on the field. Depending on the type of policy, it can cover medical costs, physio, dental work, time off work and sometimes gives a cash payout to cover other costs associated with recovery.

Some AFL insurance is bundled into club registrations through state football associations and national programs. Others buy it individually as personal accident or sports injury insurance. Travel insurance can sometimes cover football, but some policies exclude contact sports or charge higher premiums for them.

Flip offers on-demand personal accident insurance that can be used by AFL players. When you have an eligible injury and we approve your claim, we pay you cash, usually within a couple of business days. You decide when to activate cover (a single match, a week, a month, a season or a full year), and you spend the payout however you choose, like on transport, food deliveries, medical supplies or anything else you need while you’re out of action. Flip is flexible, instant and works for any type of football in Australia, New Zealand and covered overseas destinations.

Who is Flip AFL insurance for?

arrow down

Flip AFL insurance is for Australian residents aged 5–64. It's not available to tourists. It's flexible enough to work for all kinds of football players and situations, including:

  • Auskick and junior AFL participants
  • School footy players and carnival participants
  • Community club players (junior, youth and senior)
  • AFL Nines and modified format players
  • Rep and state-level players
  • AFL and AFLW professionals and elite athletes
  • Coaches, umpires and trainers
  • Players heading on footy tours or interstate carnivals
  • Clubs offering cover to members
  • Schools and youth footy programs
  • Carnival and gala day organisers

Does Flip cover all formats of Australian Rules Football?

arrow down

Yes. Flip covers eligible accidental injuries in all formats including community club footy, school footy, AFL Nines, Auskick, AFLW and AFL. As long as your cover is active when you're injured, you're protected regardless of the format you're playing.

Can I use Flip for my local club or school tournament?

arrow down

Yes. Flip Group Active is suitable for AFL clubs, teams, schools and tournaments. You can bundle cover into membership fees, event rego or tour costs so everyone who plays is protected. It's simple to set up and your players claim directly through the app.

Does Flip cover kids who play AFL?

arrow down

Yes. Flip covers people aged 5–64, so junior players from Auskick age upwards are eligible. Parents can purchase Flip Active for their children, or clubs, schools and Auskick centres and junior clubs can use Flip Group Active to cover all participants in their program.

Am I only covered for injuries during football matches?

arrow down

When you have Flip Active or Flip Roaming, you're covered for a wide range of eligible accidental injuries, whether they happen on the field, at training, or even off the field (like falling down stairs at home). It's not limited to matches.

However, if you are covered by a Group Active policy through your club, then you should check with them to find out when you are covered, which is usually only when you’re participating in a specified event or location visit.

Is my footy gear covered if it's stolen or damaged?

arrow down

No. Flip pays you cash for eligible accidental injuries to you, not for lost or damaged equipment. For stolen boots or damaged gear, you'd need contents or personal property insurance. That said, the cash Flip pays on approved injury claims is yours to use however you choose.

Can I get one-day AFL insurance for a single match?

arrow down

Yes. Flip Active can be purchased for a single day for $7. You can activate it immediately before the first bounce, or schedule it up to a year in advance if you already have your fixture or carnival dates confirmed.

How much does AFL insurance cost?

arrow down

Flip Active starts at $7 for one day, $25 for a week, or $40 for a month. Flip Roaming costs $80 per week or $190 for 30 days for overseas trips in covered destinations. Flip Group Active pricing is customised based on how many players you're covering and for how long.

Do I need AFL insurance if I already have private health insurance?

arrow down

Private health insurance and Medicare can cover a lot of medical costs, but injuries often come with unforeseen expenses. Flip gives you fast, flexible cash payouts to boost your recovery and provide a financial buffer for the true cost of an accidental injury.

Is Flip AFL insurance the same as travel insurance?

arrow down

No. Flip Roaming is not travel insurance and does not cover things like trip cancellations, lost luggage and emergency medical evacuation.

Flip covers accidental injuries, including injuries that happen while playing AFL in covered destinations. It reimburses you for overseas medical expenses related to eligible accidental injuries and pays you cash to use however you want. It can work together with travel insurance. You should check your travel insurance policy carefully to understand what it covers, and read our PDS to determine whether Flip product is right for you. What's the difference between AFL club insurance and AFL player insurance?

arrow down

AFL club insurance (sometimes called public liability insurance) typically protects the organisation from lawsuits. Personal AFL insurance, like Flip, protects individual players by paying them cash for eligible accidental injuries. Many clubs carry both, one that covers the organisation, and one that covers the people on the field.
