Do you need skiing or snowboarding insurance?

Skiing and snowboarding insurance isn't mandatory in Australia, but a lot of skiers, families and snow sports clubs are choosing to have it in place before they head up the mountain.

We love the snow, and we’re travelling further to find it.

From a winter weekend at Falls Creek to a week long powder trip to Hokkaido, snow sports are a significant part of how active Australians spend their time and money.

The risk of injury from skiing and snowboarding is real.

Injuries can happen on any ordinary ski days, on or off piste. Ice and snow sports caused around 1,600 hospitalisations in 2023-24. Almost two thirds of the hospitalisations were for fractures, with soft tissue injuries and dislocations among the other top common causes.

Snow sports insurance helps with injury costs you don't plan for.

If you catch an edge or land badly with Flip activated and suffer an eligible injury, we pay you a set cash amount straight to your bank account for approved claims, usually within a few business days.

What is skiing insurance with Flip?

Flip offers personal accidental injury cover that can be used by skiers and snowboarders. If you suffer an eligible accidental injury while carving fresh tracks with your cover active, we pay you cash to help you recover.

The cash payout is yours to spend however makes most sense for your recovery. Things like physio sessions, a wrist brace, a new streaming subscription, getting someone to drive you around, or just having a buffer for peace of mind while your body heals.

Choose from three types of skiing insurance for accidental injuries

The right option for you depends on how often you go to the snow, whether you're covering yourself or a whole program, and whether you're skiing locally or heading overseas.

We can't tell you what to buy, but here's how each option works to help you decide. Always read our PDS to see if Flip is right for you.

Choose how long you need cover from a single day to all year. Use it just for your ski days, or run it continuously through the season if you want cover across all your snow activity.

It works for all kinds of snow sports participants — kids at ski school, families on annual ski holidays, instructors heading up each morning and experienced riders tackling backcountry terrain. With Flip, you only pay for cover when you need it, and you can mix and match options over the year.

Hear from our snow sports customers

Damian Goninan
Events and Partnerships Manager, Thredbo

Thredbo used Flip Group Active to provide accidental injury cover for participants at Battle on the Bluff, one of Australia's most celebrated on-snow events. When one competitor fractured his tibia and fibula during the event, his claim was handled directly through Flip with no administration required from the Thredbo team.

"We love that it adds value for our guests without adding complexity for us. We don’t have to handle claims – Flip takes care of that – so we can stay focused on delivering great experiences."

How to use skiing insurance

Here's how Flip works in practice, from a solo day at the resort to school ski trips and overseas powder holidays.

For skiers and boarders

Flip Active

For overseas snow trips

Flip Roaming

For ski schools and programs

Flip Group Active

For local rides

Flip Active

If you take a hard fall on the moguls and fracture your collarbone, Flip pays you cash within a few business days. The cash is yours to use however you want.

If your skis and boots go missing from the drying room at the lodge, that’s not covered by Flip Active.

Flip Active covers skiing, snowboarding and a wide range of snow sports in Australia and NZ, including resort runs, terrain parks, heli-skiing, cross-country trails and backcountry riding.

For cycling overseas

Flip Roaming

If you're skiing in France and suffer a fractured arm, Flip Roaming reimburses your overseas medical costs (up to A$20,000) and pays you Extra Recovery Cash.

If you get food poisoning and have to cancel part of your trip, that's a travel insurance issue, not something Flip Roaming covers.

Travel insurance stops when you land back in Australia. Flip Roaming doesn't. Extra Recovery Cash helps with costs after you get home so you’re supported to get back on the mountain.

For group rides

Flip Group Active

If a student on a school ski camp fractures their wrist in a beginner lesson, they claim through the Flip app and receive a cash payout within a few business days, with no admin for the school.

If a participant arrives at your skiing event with a knee injury from last month, pre-existing injuries aren't covered under Flip Group Active.

With Flip Group Active, participants claim through the app themselves. No invoices to chase, no paperwork on your end, just fast cash for eligible injuries when someone in your program needs it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ski insurance?

arrow down

Skiing and snowboarding insurance helps protect participants from the financial impact of getting injured on the mountain. Depending on the type of policy, it can cover medical costs, physio, dental work, time off work and sometimes gives a cash payout to cover other costs associated with recovery.

Some snow sports cover comes bundled into memberships or school program packages. Others buy it individually as personal accident or sports injury insurance. Travel insurance can sometimes cover football, but some policies exclude extreme sports or charge higher premiums for them.

Flip offers on-demand personal accident insurance that can be used by skiers and snowboarders. When you have an eligible injury and we approve your claim, we pay you cash, usually within a couple of business days.

You decide when to activate cover (a single day, a week, a month, a season or a full year), and you spend the payout however you choose, like on transport, food deliveries, medical supplies or anything else you need while you’re out of action. Flip is flexible, instant and works for almost any type of skiing and snowboarding in Australia, New Zealand and covered overseas destinations.

Who is Flip skiing insurance for?

arrow down

Flip skiing insurance is for Australian residents aged 5–64. It's not available to tourists visiting Australia. It can work for all kinds of snow sports participants, including:

  • Beginners on their first lesson or day trip
  • Regular skiers and snowboarders doing weekend trips and longer holidays
  • Families with kids in snow school or junior programs
  • Students on school ski camps and interschool competitions
  • Alpine and snowboard racing club members
  • Backcountry and off-piste riders
  • Instructors and snow sports coaches
  • Australians heading overseas to covered destinations
  • Ski schools, programs events and competition wanting to cover all participants

Does Flip cover all types of skiing and snowboarding?

arrow down

Yes. Flip covers eligible accidental injuries across snow sports formats including alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, heli-skiing, freestyle and backcountry riding, whether you're on groomed runs, in the terrain park or off-piste.

Does Flip cover professional skiers and snowboarders?

arrow down

Yes. Flip covers professional snow sports athletes for eligible accidental injuries during training, competition and activity in covered locations. The only exception is injuries that occur while doing paid work unrelated to being a professional athlete, coach or instructor.

Can I use Flip for my snow sports program or event?

arrow down

Yes. Flip Group Active can be used for ski schools, snow sports clubs, school ski camps and events. Bundle cover into your fees or registrations so every participant is included. Participants claim through the app themselves, keeping administration simple for you.

Does Flip cover kids who ski or snowboard?

arrow down

Yes. Flip covers people aged 5 to 64, so children from ski school age are eligible. Parents can arrange Flip Active for their kids individually, or ski schools and programs can use Flip Group Active to cover all participants at once.

Am I only covered while I'm on the ski runs?

arrow down

When you have Flip Active or Flip Roaming, you're covered for a wide range of eligible accidental injuries, whether they happen on the groomed runs, off-piste, or even around the resort (like falling down stairs at the lodge). It's not limited to time in the snow.

However, if you are covered by a Group Active policy through your school or club, then you should check with them to find out when you are covered, which is usually only when you’re participating in a specified event or location visit.

Is my ski gear covered if it's stolen or damaged?

arrow down

No. Flip pays you cash for eligible accidental injuries to you, not for lost or damaged equipment. For stolen boots or damaged gear, you'd need contents or personal property insurance. That said, the cash Flip pays on approved injury claims is yours to use however you choose.

Can I get one-day skiing insurance for a day trip?

arrow down

Yes. Flip Active can be purchased for a single day for $7. Activate it on the morning you head to the mountain, or set it up in advance once you've confirmed your ski day.

How much does skiing insurance cost?

arrow down

Pricing for skiing insurance with Flip depends on your age, how long you want cover for and where you'll be.

Flip Active for adventures in Australia and NZ starts at $7 for a single day, with options for weekly, monthly and season passes, plus subscriptions that work out cheaper per day if you are active more often.

Flip Roaming is for overseas trips in covered destinations and starts at $65 per week for kids and $75 per week for adults, with an option for 30-day cover.

Flip Group Active for clubs, sporting venues and events is also available, with custom pricing based on participant numbers and cover length.

Do I need skiing insurance if I already have private health insurance?

arrow down

Private health insurance and Medicare can cover a lot of medical costs, but injuries often come with unforeseen expenses. Flip gives you fast, flexible cash payouts to boost your recovery and provide a financial buffer for the true cost of an accidental injury.

Is Flip Roaming the same as travel insurance for a ski trip?

arrow down

No. Flip Roaming is not travel insurance and does not cover things like trip cancellations, lost luggage and emergency medical evacuation.

Flip covers accidental injuries, including injuries that happen while skiing and snowboarding in covered destinations. It reimburses you for overseas medical expenses and pays you cash for eligible accidental injuries to use however you want. It can work together with travel insurance. You should check your travel insurance policy carefully to understand what it covers, and read our PDS to determine whether Flip product is right for you. Learn more about How Flip Roaming can complement your travel insurance.

What's the difference between public liability insurance and skiing insurance?

arrow down

Many ski resorts in Australia will carry public liability insurance which typically protects the organisation from lawsuits. Personal skiing insurance, like Flip, protects individual skiers by paying them cash for eligible accidental injuries. Some resorts carry both, one that covers the organisation, and one that covers the people on the slopes.
