When you’re madly preparing for your next overseas adventure, it’s easy to skip the fine print and assume that your travel insurance has you fully covered—but does it really?

Travel insurance is essential for things like lost luggage, cancellations and certain medical costs. But it may not cover everything you need for your trip, especially for people who love adventure travel and high-risk activities like skiing, mountain biking or white-water rafting.

That's where Flip Roaming comes in. It's specialist accidental injury insurance designed to sit alongside your travel policy.

What exactly is Flip Roaming?

Flip Roaming is accidental injury insurance for travelling Australians. It provides some financial support for your recovery if you get hurt doing almost any activity at one of our covered international destinations.

Flip Roaming is not travel insurance. It doesn’t cover medical costs resulting from illness,  travel related costs such as cancellations or lost luggage or the cost of repatriation or transport back to Australia — that's what your travel policy is for.

Instead, Flip Roaming focuses purely on supporting you if you suffer an accidental injury, giving you peace of mind whether you’re heli-skiing in Switzerland or surfing in Bali that you’ll have a financial buffer to support your recovery if things go wrong.

Travel insurance policies commonly limit the activities you are covered for. On the other hand, Flip Roaming covers almost every activity, even extreme adventure sports (apart from motorcycling).

With Flip Roaming, you get:

  • Overseas Medical Reimbursement of up to $20,000 for eligible medical costs if you're accidentally injured at a covered destination
  • Extra Recovery Payout of up to $50,000 for eligible accidental injuries, paid in cash directly to your bank account to use however you like, on crutches, taxis, food deliveries, or anything else you need while you recover.

There's no excess to worry about, and both benefits can be claimed on the same injury, up to a combined maximum of A$70,000.

How Flip Roaming works alongside your travel insurance

Travel insurance is great at what it does, but Flip Roaming adds an extra layer of specialised accidental injury cover. Think of it as your travel insurance’s wingman, covering areas where travel insurance might fall short. For example:

  • Extreme activities: If your travel insurance doesn’t cover injuries during risky activities like off-piste skiing, mountain biking or competitive sport, Flip Roaming can step in.
  • No excess: Unlike travel insurance, which often comes with an excess on claims, Flip Roaming has no excess, so you get reimbursed for all eligible medical costs overseas up to $20,000.
  • Post-return recovery cash: Flip Roaming offers an extra recovery payout of up to $50,000 to help you with recovery costs back home, something that travel insurance typically won’t cover.

Charlie

Charlie went snowboarding in Japan

Charlie was snowboarding in Japan when they fell and landed painfully on their knee.
Charlie went straight to the nearby medical centre, where they were diagnosed with a complete tear of their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) by an MRI.

Charlie paid ¥130,000 (~A$1,150) for the medical care in Japan+
For illustration purposes only.
+ Based on the exchange rate at the time.

Here's how we did the math:
