Horse riding insurance isn't compulsory in Australia, but many riders, equestrian coaches and event organisers see it as a smart add-on for a sport where things don’t always go to plan.
Australians have long enjoyed a love affair with their horses, enjoying everything from pony club rallies and school programs to trail riding, lessons, dressage, showjumping and eventing.
Over 134,000 adults aged 15 and over went horse riding in 2023-24. In the same period, there were 2,100 hospitalisations caused by horse riding injuries. Over half of the hospitalisations were for fractures.
If you suffer an eligible injury with Flip activated, we pay you a set cash amount straight to your bank account for approved claims, usually within a few business days.
Flip offers personal accidental injury cover that can be used for horse riding. It is not cover for your horse or your tack, and it isn’t public liability insurance. It provides a financial buffer to help you recover if you suffer an eligible injury while riding.
The cash payout is yours to use however you want. That might be physio, a brace, transport to appointments, getting someone to help around the stables, or whatever else makes recovery more manageable.
The right option for you depends on how often you ride, where you ride and who you want to get cover for. You might want day cover for a clinic or trail ride, horse riding insurance for an overseas holiday, or a group option for a pony club, riding school or event.
We can't tell you what to buy, but here's how each option works to help you decide. Always read our PDS to see if Flip is right for you.
Flip Active can be used for all kinds of horse riding across Australia and New Zealand. You can choose how long you need cover from a single day to all year. Turn it on for the days you are riding, or keep it running all year if horses are a regular part of your week.
It suits a wide mix of riders, from kids in pony club and adults getting back into riding to competitive riders, trail riders and equestrian coaches and instructors. With Flip, you can mix and match options so you are only paying for cover when you feel most at risk.
If you are heading overseas to ride, trek or compete, you can buy Flip Roaming by the week or in 30-day blocks. It reimburses overseas medical expenses and pays you cash for eligible accidental injuries on your trip.
Flip Roaming gives you two layers of protection.
Flip Group Active can be used by pony clubs, riding schools, equestrian centres, school programs, holiday camps, clinics and events that want participant injury cover built in from the start.
You can include the costs of accidental injury cover in the registration process, rather than leaving riders and families to figure it out on their own. It is a practical option for organisations that want to show they take rider welfare seriously without creating more administration for staff or volunteers.
Sophie was having a jumping lesson when her horse pulled up short at a fence and stopped suddenly, sending her over its shoulder.
She was diagnosed with a simple collarbone fracture.
She paid $7 for Flip Active for the day and got a $400 payout.

Peter rides his bike to work in any weather and on busy city paths. He wanted cycling insurance that would offer financial support if he had an accidental injury on the road. He chose Flip Active's monthly subscription for everyday peace of mind.
"Having paid for the peace of mind that Flip gives me for my cycling, that cover also means that if I do engage in any other activities, I have cover for those as well for no additional cost, and I don't even need to think about it. I think it gave my partner a bit of peace of mind as well."

"You feel an obligation to look after your riders and give them protection in case something happens. I’d say it’s a must-have. It’s just the right thing to do. If you want something that’s easy to set up, affordable, and gives you peace of mind that you’ve done the right thing by your riders, Flip Group Active fits the bill."

Here’s how Flip works in practice, from local riding sessions and trail rides to overseas riding holidays and group programs.
If your horse shies during a beginner lesson and you fall and fracture your leg, Flip Active pays you a cash payout within a few business days. The cash is yours to use however you want.
If your saddle or riding boots are stolen from the float or tack room, that's not covered by Flip Active.
Flip Active can be used for horse riding lessons, trail riding, pony club, clinics, coaching and competition riding in Australia and NZ.
If you are on a riding holiday in Italy and are thrown during a trail ride, Flip Roaming reimburses your overseas medical costs (up to A$20,000) and pays you Extra Recovery Cash.
If you get gastro on your trip and have to cancel part of your riding holiday, that's a travel insurance issue, not something Flip Roaming covers.
Travel insurance stops when you land back in Australia. Flip Roaming doesn't. Extra Recovery Cash helps with costs after you get home so you’re supported to get back in the saddle.
If a child rider falls during a pony club rally and dislocates their shoulder, their parent can claim through the Flip app and receive a cash payout within a few business days, with no admin for your team.
If a participant arrives at horse camp with a knee injury from last month, pre-existing injuries aren't covered under Flip Group Active.
With Flip Group Active, participants claim through the app themselves. No invoices to chase, no paperwork on your end, just fast cash for eligible injuries when someone in your program needs it.

Horse riding insurance helps protect riders from the financial impact of accidental injuries. Depending on the type of cover, it may help with things like medical costs, physio and other recovery-related expenses.
Some horse riding insurance can be bundled into memberships or program packages, while some can be purchased by individuals as personal accident or sports injury insurance. Travel insurance can sometimes cover horse riding, but some policies exclude higher-risk activities or apply limits.

A pony club, riding school or event organiser may have public liability insurance, which typically protects the organisation from lawsuits. Personal horse riding insurance, like Flip, offers some protection to individual climbers by paying them cash for eligible accidental injuries. Some businesses carry both, one that covers the organisation, and one that covers the people.
