Do you need rock climbing insurance?

Rock climbing insurance isn't mandatory in Australia, but it's becoming a smart add-on for climbers, families and climbing gyms who want some protection for training seasons and active days out.

We’re climbing in more ways and more places than ever before.

Rock climbing is a growing part of Australia's active culture, with thousands of people taking part in rock climbing, abseiling and caving every year.

Climbing can be risky business.

A simple slip can lead to fractures, dislocations, chipped teeth or concussions that can take you out for weeks. These injuries can happen to beginners and experienced climbers alike.

Rock climbing insurance can help with recovery costs you didn't see coming.

If you suffer an eligible injury with Flip activated, we pay you a set cash amount straight to your bank account for approved claims, usually within a few business days.

What is rock climbing insurance with Flip?

Flip offers personal accidental injury cover that can be used for rock climbing and bouldering. It isn't gear cover, and it isn't public liability insurance. It provides a financial buffer to help you recover if you suffer an eligible injury while climbing.

The cash payout is yours to use however you want. That might be finger taping and splints, physio appointments, takeaway while you're stuck at home or Ubers to work while you’re getting around in a moon boot.

Choose from three types of rock climbing insurance for accidental injuries

The best option comes down to how you climb, where you climb and who you want to get cover for. You might want day cover for exploring a new crag, climbing insurance for an overseas holiday, or a group option for a club, comp or venue.

We can't tell you what to buy, but here's how each option works to help you decide. Always read our PDS to see if Flip is right for you.

For indoor and outdoor climbers

Flip Active

For rock climbing in Australia and NZ

If most of your climbing happens close to home, Flip Active is a great option to look at. It can be used for indoor bouldering, rope climbing, outdoor sport routes, trad weekends and comps across Australia and New Zealand.

Choose how long you need cover from a single day to all year. Turn it on for the days you're climbing, or keep it running if climbing is a regular part of your routine.

It suits a wide mix of climbers, from kids in climbing programs and first-timers at the gym to experienced outdoor climbers and comp athletes. With Flip, you can mix and match options so you’re only paying for cover when you feel at risk of injury.

Jake
Rock climber

Jake has been climbing for years and had a serious injury that left him temporarily blind in one eye. That experience made him realise how exposed he was without any financial backup, and set him on a search for cover that can be used by active people.

"Other insurance is more expensive and it’s pretty daunting when it comes to bills. Flip on the other hand, I don’t even notice the payments. It’s not an issue."

How to use rock climbing insurance

Here's how Flip works in practice, from indoor sessions and outdoor trips to overseas climbing holidays and group programs.

For indoor and outdoor climbers

Flip Active

For overseas bouldering trips

Flip Roaming

For rock climbing gyms and clubs

Flip Group Active

For local rides

Flip Active

If you lose your footing and slip and fracture your wrist, Flip Active pays you a cash payout within a few business days. The cash is yours to use however you want.

If your climbing shoes or harness are stolen from the gym, that's not covered by Flip Active.

Flip Active can be used for indoor bouldering, rope climbing, outdoor sport climbing, trad, comps and extreme climbing in Australia and NZ.

For cycling overseas

Flip Roaming

If you're doing a bucket list climb in Norway and suffer a dislocated shoulder, Flip Roaming reimburses your overseas medical costs (up to A$20,000) and pays you Extra Recovery Cash.

If you get food poisoning and have to cancel part of your trip, that's a travel insurance issue, not something Flip Roaming covers.

Travel insurance stops when you land back in Australia. Flip Roaming doesn't. Extra Recovery Cash helps with costs after you get home so you’re supported to get back on the crag.

For group rides

Flip Group Active

If a participant at a youth climbing program falls and knocks out a tooth, they claim through the Flip app and receive a cash payout within a few business days, with no admin for your team.

If a participant arrives at your rock climbing event with a finger injury from last month, pre-existing injuries aren't covered under Flip Group Active.

With Flip Group Active, participants claim through the app themselves. No invoices to chase, no paperwork on your end, just fast cash for eligible injuries when someone in your program needs it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is rock climbing insurance?

arrow down

Rock climbing insurance helps protect climbers from the financial impact of accidental injuries. Depending on the type of cover, it may help with things like medical costs, physio and other recovery-related expenses.

Some rock climbing insurance can be bundled into memberships or program packages. Or it can be purchased by individuals as personal accident or sports injury insurance. Travel insurance can sometimes cover rock climbing, but some policies exclude extreme sports or charge higher premiums for them.

Flip offers on-demand personal accidental injury insurance that can be used by rock climbers and boulderers. When you have an eligible injury and we approve your claim, we pay you cash, usually within a couple of business days.

You decide when to activate cover (a single day, a week, a month, a season or a full year), and you spend the payout however you choose, like on transport, food deliveries, medical supplies or anything else you need while you’re out of action. Flip is flexible, instant and works for almost any type of rock climbing in Australia, New Zealand and covered overseas destinations.

Who is Flip rock climbing insurance for?

arrow down

Flip rock climbing insurance is for Australian residents aged 5–64. It's not available to tourists visiting Australia. It can be used by a wide range of climbers and groups, including:

  • Beginner to advanced indoor climbers and boulderers
  • Outdoor sport and trad climbers
  • Kids in youth climbing programs
  • School groups and climbing camps
  • Competition climbers
  • Professional climbers
  • Australians heading on climbing holidays overseas
  • Clubs, gyms and organisers who want to cover participants

Does Flip cover all types of rock climbing?

arrow down

Yes. Flip covers eligible accidental injuries across a range of climbing formats, including bouldering, indoor rope climbing, outdoor sport climbing, trad climbing and competition climbing.

Does Flip cover professional rock climbers?

arrow down

Yes. Flip covers professional climbers for eligible accidental injuries during training, competition and activity in covered locations. The only exception is injuries that happen while doing paid work unrelated to being a professional athlete, coach or instructor.

Can I use Flip for my rock climbing gym or event?

arrow down

Yes. Flip Group Active can be used for climbing gyms, clubs, school groups and events. You can bundle cover into registrations, memberships or event fees so participants are covered while taking part. Participants claim through the app themselves, keeping administration simple for you.

Does Flip cover kids who rock climb?

arrow down

Yes. Flip covers people aged 5 to 64, so children in youth climbing programs are eligible. Parents can buy Flip cover for their children, or gyms and programs can use Flip Group Active to cover everyone together.

Am I only covered while I'm actually climbing?

arrow down

When you have Flip Active or Flip Roaming activated, you're covered for a wide range of eligible accidental injuries, whether they happen at the gym, on the crag, or even around the house (like falling down stairs).

However, if you are covered by a Group Active policy through your school or club, then you should check with them to find out when you are covered, which is usually only when you’re participating in a specified event or location visit.

Is my climbing gear covered if it's stolen or damaged?

arrow down

No. Flip pays you cash for eligible accidental injuries to you, not for lost or damaged equipment. For stolen or damaged gear, you'd need contents or personal property insurance. That said, the cash Flip pays on approved injury claims is yours to use however you choose.

Can I get one-day rock climbing insurance for a day trip?

arrow down

Yes. Flip Active can be purchased for a single day for $7. Activate it on the morning before your climb, or set it up in advance once you've confirmed your plans.

How much does rock climbing insurance cost?

arrow down

Flip Active starts at $7 for one day, $25 for a week, or $40 for a month. Flip Roaming costs $80 per week or $190 for 30 days for overseas trips in covered destinations. Flip Group Active pricing is customised based on how many participants you're covering and for how long.

Do I need rock climbing insurance if I already have private health insurance?

arrow down

Private health insurance and Medicare can cover a lot of medical costs, but injuries often come with unforeseen expenses. Flip gives you a fast, flexible cash payout for eligible injuries to help with those extra costs.

Is Flip Roaming the same as travel insurance for a climbing trip?

arrow down

No. Flip Roaming is not travel insurance and does not cover things like trip cancellations, lost luggage and emergency medical evacuation.

Flip covers accidental injuries, including injuries that happen while rock climbing at covered destinations. It reimburses you for overseas medical expenses and pays you cash for eligible accidental injuries to use however you want. It can work together with travel insurance. You should check your travel insurance policy carefully to understand what it covers, and read our PDS to determine whether Flip product is right for you. Learn more about How Flip Roaming can complement your travel insurance.

What's the difference between public liability insurance and rock climbing insurance?

arrow down

Many climbing gyms or event organisers will have public liability insurance which typically protects the organisation from lawsuits. Personal rock climbing insurance, like Flip, offers some protection to individual climbers by paying them cash for eligible accidental injuries. Some businesses carry both, one that covers the organisation, and one that covers the people.
