Rock climbing insurance isn't mandatory in Australia, but it's becoming a smart add-on for climbers, families and climbing gyms who want some protection for training seasons and active days out.
Rock climbing is a growing part of Australia's active culture, with thousands of people taking part in rock climbing, abseiling and caving every year.
A simple slip can lead to fractures, dislocations, chipped teeth or concussions that can take you out for weeks. These injuries can happen to beginners and experienced climbers alike.
If you suffer an eligible injury with Flip activated, we pay you a set cash amount straight to your bank account for approved claims, usually within a few business days.
Flip offers personal accidental injury cover that can be used for rock climbing and bouldering. It isn't gear cover, and it isn't public liability insurance. It provides a financial buffer to help you recover if you suffer an eligible injury while climbing.
The cash payout is yours to use however you want. That might be finger taping and splints, physio appointments, takeaway while you're stuck at home or Ubers to work while you’re getting around in a moon boot.
The best option comes down to how you climb, where you climb and who you want to get cover for. You might want day cover for exploring a new crag, climbing insurance for an overseas holiday, or a group option for a club, comp or venue.
We can't tell you what to buy, but here's how each option works to help you decide. Always read our PDS to see if Flip is right for you.
If most of your climbing happens close to home, Flip Active is a great option to look at. It can be used for indoor bouldering, rope climbing, outdoor sport routes, trad weekends and comps across Australia and New Zealand.
Choose how long you need cover from a single day to all year. Turn it on for the days you're climbing, or keep it running if climbing is a regular part of your routine.
It suits a wide mix of climbers, from kids in climbing programs and first-timers at the gym to experienced outdoor climbers and comp athletes. With Flip, you can mix and match options so you’re only paying for cover when you feel at risk of injury.
You can buy Flip Roaming by the week or in 30-day blocks. It reimburses overseas medical expenses and pays you cash for eligible accidental injuries on your trip, whether you're heading to Frederikshavn, Fontainebleau or Flatanger.
Flip Roaming gives you two layers of protection.
Flip Group Active can be used for climbing gyms, youth climbing programs, school groups, events, and any organisation that wants to offer accidental injury cover to everyone taking part.
Instead of asking every family or participant to organise their own cover, you can include the cost in registration fees, memberships or event entry. It's a practical value-add that supports participant welfare, builds trust and keeps administration simple for your team.
Jake has been climbing for years and had a serious injury that left him temporarily blind in one eye. That experience made him realise how exposed he was without any financial backup, and set him on a search for cover that can be used by active people.
"Other insurance is more expensive and it’s pretty daunting when it comes to bills. Flip on the other hand, I don’t even notice the payments. It’s not an issue."

Here's how Flip works in practice, from indoor sessions and outdoor trips to overseas climbing holidays and group programs.
If you lose your footing and slip and fracture your wrist, Flip Active pays you a cash payout within a few business days. The cash is yours to use however you want.
If your climbing shoes or harness are stolen from the gym, that's not covered by Flip Active.
Flip Active can be used for indoor bouldering, rope climbing, outdoor sport climbing, trad, comps and extreme climbing in Australia and NZ.
If you're doing a bucket list climb in Norway and suffer a dislocated shoulder, Flip Roaming reimburses your overseas medical costs (up to A$20,000) and pays you Extra Recovery Cash.
If you get food poisoning and have to cancel part of your trip, that's a travel insurance issue, not something Flip Roaming covers.
Travel insurance stops when you land back in Australia. Flip Roaming doesn't. Extra Recovery Cash helps with costs after you get home so you’re supported to get back on the crag.
If a participant at a youth climbing program falls and knocks out a tooth, they claim through the Flip app and receive a cash payout within a few business days, with no admin for your team.
If a participant arrives at your rock climbing event with a finger injury from last month, pre-existing injuries aren't covered under Flip Group Active.
With Flip Group Active, participants claim through the app themselves. No invoices to chase, no paperwork on your end, just fast cash for eligible injuries when someone in your program needs it.

Rock climbing insurance helps protect climbers from the financial impact of accidental injuries. Depending on the type of cover, it may help with things like medical costs, physio and other recovery-related expenses.
Some rock climbing insurance can be bundled into memberships or program packages. Or it can be purchased by individuals as personal accident or sports injury insurance. Travel insurance can sometimes cover rock climbing, but some policies exclude extreme sports or charge higher premiums for them.
Flip offers on-demand personal accidental injury insurance that can be used by rock climbers and boulderers. When you have an eligible injury and we approve your claim, we pay you cash, usually within a couple of business days.
You decide when to activate cover (a single day, a week, a month, a season or a full year), and you spend the payout however you choose, like on transport, food deliveries, medical supplies or anything else you need while you’re out of action. Flip is flexible, instant and works for almost any type of rock climbing in Australia, New Zealand and covered overseas destinations.

Many climbing gyms or event organisers will have public liability insurance which typically protects the organisation from lawsuits. Personal rock climbing insurance, like Flip, offers some protection to individual climbers by paying them cash for eligible accidental injuries. Some businesses carry both, one that covers the organisation, and one that covers the people.
